A therory:

Maybe by that time she knew he had been into something bloody that night. Jasper said MF would have had plastic sheets in the Scout etc. But i don't believe he could have been that perfect. He most probably gave her orders not to look into the Scout anytime soon. Period. He also had to go to the muder scene right away after "being awoken" at 01:00, so it's unlikely he had enought time to let every drop of blood disappear before daylight. In an older post from Jasper, he said MF had his sleeves not rolled up being at the scene. If that is true, and the other cop's had all theirs sleeves rolled up, that's the key, he must have had some scars, and at least Caroline must have seen them sometime.

Now if MF kept denying it to her, "confessing" an affair, she was ON HER OWN. Then she prepared a statement to help him anyway in case someone accused him of murder. With the accusations of glove planting, that must have been threatening enough for her, and she fired out the prepared alibi without thinking twice.

It's interesting how MF waited up to the last moment until telling the c.c.-alibi, and then giving it bit by bit:

1.Was at Pomona gas-station. (investigator's reaction: Ah, no proof)

2.Paid with credit card. (investigator's reaction: Ah, pay-at-the-pump)

3.Also bought Snapple, Taquito (investigator's reaction: Damn, not pay-at-the-pump)

I wonder what number 4. would have been, we might never know. Also interesting about 3.: he came from a barbecue, so why eat at the gas-station?
