Buster,

I think you have to make a clear distinction between the LAPD and corrupt elements within the LAPD. All large, complex organizations have them because all large, complex organizations have compartmentalized structures with operations and procedures within those compartments that only the people directly involved in them know about. In addition to their official chains of command they have networks of associates cutting across departmental lines with their own leadership structures and agendas.

The difference with the LAPD lies in its history of high-ranking officers who made up their own rules of conduct to do whatever they wanted to do and a district attorney’s office that turned a blind eye to their illegal actions to win convictions. I’m guessing that Fuhrman had his eye on the LAPD early in his military career and made contacts with influential LAPD officers during joint operations, like busting drug-smuggling rings involving Marine Corps personnel and civilians in LA. I’m also guessing that he was engaged in undercover work for high purposes using illegal means.

Fuhrman’s involvement in anti-narcotics work stands out from his earliest years on the LAPD. So does his ambition “to make the big arrest,” which could have undermined larger police operations. The biggest arrest he could have made was the arrest of O.J. Simpson when O.J. moved to Brentwood with Nicole in 1978 under the watchful eyes of a Buffalo police, LAPD and federal law enforcement task force. O.J. was a casual drug user in Buffalo and at least until 1984 in Brentwood. Through surveillance of him, the task force hoped to round up everybody linked to his supply line. In 1978 Daryl Gates was the new Chief of Police. He said, “Casual drug users should be taken out and shot.”

Fuhrman worked in a “low class” part of greater LA where his chances of meeting O.J. in his official capacity were slim unless he could work his way into a special undercover assignment. His clumsy attempt to get a disability retirement could have been a ruse to get the attention of Daryl Gates or, if he was already in Gates’ inner circle, to give him cover for a really BIG undercover assignment within the Madam Alex organization.

Follow the cocaine trial. There you will find Gates, O.J., Nicole, A.C., Joey Ippolito, Pat Goldman, Ron Goldman, Ron Shipp, Keith Zlomsowitch, Faye Resnick, Heidi Fleiss, Madam Alex, Kris (Kardashian) Jenner, William Wasz, Michelle Kestler, possibly Denise and definitely Fuhrman. –Jasper
