Buster,

O.J. is a man of the moment. He has been in the public eye his entire adult life. He developed a style of handling the media effectively based on his popular image on and off the football field.

Fuhrman’s February 18. 1989 letter to the city attorney set up O.J. for a public spouse abuse trial. Nicole did not press charges (if she had, I believe she would have gone to jail for assaulting the maid). By pleading “no contest” (guilty) O.J. was able to avoid the trial, say a few words in his defense to the media without fear of rebottle (he had ready access to the media/ his accusers, Nicole and Fuhrman, did not). It was a pragmatic strategy intended to put the incident behind him as quickly as possible. It seemed to work.

O.J. never thought far enough ahead to see how his no contest plea could come back to haunt him. The popular view of what happened on New Year’s Day 1989 was that O.J. and Nicole got into a wrestling match when both of them had been drinking too much. The maid overreacted and called 911. That’s what O.J. said. It was good enough for the media and his fans because no one had seen the pictures, heard the tape or read Edwards’ report. As long as he apologized for his behavior he figured that he could go on with his public life as though nothing had happened. He did until June 12, 1994.

Looking back to O.J.’s public appearances in the late sixties and ahead to his latest interviews in 2004, you see the same O.J. Simpson, the same gestures, the same smile, the same little laugh. He presents himself as though his image has not changed – as though his image prior to the murders is still his best defense. He has not done a bit of independent research or communicated with anyone who has done a considerable amount of research and concluded that he couldn’t have done what the evidence presented in court said he did.

O.J. has never contacted Chris Springer, Donald Freed or me. He doesn’t know who we are, what we can do or what we have done. He has relied on other people to clear him and find the killer – people who are intent on proving their theories and making sure that O.J. never learns that people like Springer, Freed and me exist. He has made peace with himself, secure in the knowledge that he is not the monster most people think he is, and determined to live the rest of his life for his children and himself. –Jasper
