I think they looked into Ron's appartment, since they knew he had taken a shower and other things. I wonder if they didn't find something suspicious like crazy figures in his bank records etc, and when police investigates something, they ALWAYS FIND SOMETHING SUSPICIOUS... In any case someone could have cleaned up some evidence, there, too, before it was searched.
